The Gateshead Housing Company and its partners have helped a local football club to clean up.Wrekenton Blue Star FC appealed to the housing company’s Community Fund to provide referees’ shower and toilet facilities at its clubhouse. The club hosts adult and junior football in the Gateshead and District Football League, girls’ and women’s football competitions, summer football coaching days and facilities for school festivals and competitions.Mears, the company that provides repairs and maintenance to almost 20,000 homes across the borough, stepped in to help the club, who was delighted with the results.Harry Fairley, Secretary/Treasurer of Wrekenton Blue Star FC, said: “According to league standards, we wouldn’t be able to host cup finals if the referee and visiting officials had to use the same changing rooms as the players. These extra facilities allow the club to maintain its cup-final status.“What a fantastic job Mears has done. I just hope we can do as well with our results on the pitch!”Estate Offer Chris Hardy said: “Our Community Fund is always keen to support organisations that aim to involve large parts of a community.“Wrekenton Blue Star FC attracts footballers of all ages and their families and has created a real community club that is making a difference in the area.”The Gateshead Housing Company’s Community Fund is supported by Gateshead Council and Mears.
