A Bristol charity which supports children and young adults with disabilities has benefited from a £10,000 grant from the Mears Foundation.

The Sense Centre Southwest in Kingswood supports people aged 0-25 with hearing and visual impairments, multi-sensory impairment, physical disabilities, autism and learning disabilities.

The grant by the Mears Foundation, the charitable arm of Mears Group, paid for a makeover of the centre including the installation of a new kitchen, painting throughout together with the new sensory lighting and touch-activated equipment for families visiting the centre.

The renovation work was carried out by Mears Facilities Management’s qualified trades staff providing their skills and time through company volunteering hours, including the necessary electrical work to connect the equipment ready for use.

Matt Hayes, Corporate Partnerships Manager, Sense UK, said:

Everyone at Sense is hugely thankful to the Mears Foundation for their continued support at Sense Centre Southwest. Through the Foundation's generosity, we have been able to provide unique opportunities to the individuals we support and their families across the region to connect with others and the world around them.
From sensory sports sessions to messy play, with the support of the Mears Foundation we have been able to continue providing vital services to children with complex disabilities and their families.
Heather Tyrer, General Manager, Mears Foundation said:
The Mears Foundation is committed to supporting people in local communities through grant-funded projects throughout the UK. We were pleased to be able to support the Sense Centre Southwest with new sensory equipment and our hope is that it continues to benefit the families visiting the Bristol Sense centre for many years to come.

Kevin Woodcock, Managing Director, Mears Facilities Management, added:

We’re delighted to be involved with Sense and help support this incredible charity and project alongside the Mears Foundation.  It’s great to see and hear about the difference we have made and the impact this will have on those using the services at Sense.
