Mears Group works in partnership with local housing association, Livin, to deliver their vital repairs and maintenance service to tenants. Some of the office team volunteered their time and use of company vehicles to support Moors in the Community, the charitable arm of Spennymoor Town FC with their twice-weekly Meals on Wheels scheme.
Moors in the Community works with Spennymoor and the surrounding areas to improve their communities and provide opportunities for all to succeed.
The Meals on Wheels project ensures that users receive a high-quality meal for minimal cost, improving the nutritional intake of elderly residents and relieving the stress on both them and their families.
The volunteers were a mixture of maintenance operatives and office staff who filled insulated bags with a main and dessert and helped to distribute them to people in Spennymoor and the surrounding area.
Mears encourages colleagues to volunteer up to two working days a year in support of its social value commitment and wanted to get involved after spotting the appeal on the charity’s Facebook page. The team had initially committed their time to volunteering once a week throughout April but are now keen to extend this.
Gemma Wilkinson, Customer Success Co-ordinator said:
All the volunteers have commented how rewarding it has been getting out and meeting people in the community and ensuring they could enjoy a hot meal during the day.
Luke Cowie, Community Development Manager for Moors in the Community, added:
We’ve recently added a Thursday on top of our Tuesday and Wednesday deliveries, so the Community Meals drive is going from strength to strength. I want to offer a massive thank you to Mears Group for their support for the delivery of the programme which is having a big impact for so many local people.
